New Staff Highlight: Matt

“I’m passionate about giving people the chance to connect to a meaningful mission…I can help this mission by getting as many people as possible invested in our families and our work. Those connections make a community whole.”

– Matt, Rockford Area Habitat for Humanity Development Specialist

It’s always exciting when our team grows, especially when there are vital roles that new teammates fill! We’re so excited to introduce our Development Specialist, Matt.

Matt is the mastermind behind gathering the financial support that RAHFH needs to further the work that we do. He works with individuals and corporations to share our vision and mission, and invites them to support RAHFH.

In Matt’s words, “There are a lot of amazing people and businesses in our area that understand the importance of our mission. It’s my job to… grow our circle of support wide enough to include all our partners, present and future.”

We had the chance to ask Matt a few other questions about himself, his work, and his passions. Here are a few highlights of Matt’s Q&A!

What is one fun or surprising fact about you?

“People are often surprised to learn that I was an IHSA state champion in high school – I don’t seem the type to win an athletic prize. And they’re right! My state prize was as part of Scholastic Bowl team; I make up for trivial knowledge what I lack in fitness and general hand-eye coordination.”

When you’re not serving with RAHFH, what are you up to? What do you do for fun?

“Would you believe, after that last bit of information, that I have been doing a lot of reading and documentary watching?? Top marks, you’re correct. I also do enjoy nature time, cooking, writing, and doing my share of political activism when able.”

What do you love about Habitat for Humanity?

“I love Habitat because it addresses a gigantic need through a framework of co-operation. Rockford families need quality, affordable housing, and that isn’t widely available. It’s not a matter of work; these families work extremely hard, often while raising kids, but hard work is rarely enough in Rockford today to secure the stability that families need. They do not need or want handouts – they are our partners and give their precious time and readily available talent to make this dream come true. I love Habitat because we respect our families and labor to give them the opportunity to amplify their greatness.”

What makes you passionate about your work?

“I’m passionate about giving people the chance to connect to a meaningful mission. Especially in quarantine, people are isolated, alienated, and feel out of touch with the world. It’s easy to feel small and divorced from the difference each one of us can make. As a Development Specialist I get to plan events, investigate giving opportunities, and just meet a lot of very interesting people all to gather support for RAHFH. I can’t install a roof, but I can help this mission by getting as many people as possible invested in our families and our work. Those connections make a community whole.”
